The battery is the part almost everyone mistreats without knowing it: charging to 100% every night, leaving it in the sun, using a knock-off charger, and running it down until it dies. The result is a phone that by one year old doesn’t make it past lunch on a full charge — when the problem was never the device, but the habits.

This guide works for both Android and iPhone and covers what really matters: how to charge, where to leave your phone, which charger and cable to use, which apps drain the most power, how to use battery saving mode, and when it’s time to replace the battery.

A lithium battery is not like the old ones: it doesn’t want to run down to empty or sit at 100% all the time. The trick isn’t a secret hack, it’s consistency — charge cycles between 20% and 80% and not too much heat.

You don’t need any tools, just the phone itself and a few minutes reading the menus. What you’ll do is first get the phone to a comfortable charge level (between 20% and 80%), then adjust the power-saving and charging settings.

The worst thing for a lithium battery is the repeated “full cycle”: hitting 0% and then filling to 100%, over and over. Every modern battery tolerates a limited number of full cycles before it starts losing capacity, and each time you take it to zero you spend a little of that budget.

In practice, do this: charge when you’re near 20% and unplug around 80% or 90%. Frequent, partial charges are healthy and don’t “addict” the battery. For daily use, charging from 30% to 90% protects the battery more over the long run than always hovering at the extremes.

If the phone hits 0% by accident, no drama: just recharge. The warning is about the habit. Letting the phone die every single day is what shortens battery life.

Keep the phone away from heat (and cold)

Heat is the number one killer of lithium batteries. It speeds up the internal chemical reactions in a way that makes capacity drop faster. The classic scenarios: leaving the phone on a car dashboard in the sun, forgetting it at the beach, charging it under a pillow, or using it for hours non-stop.

Also avoid charging with a thick case that traps heat: for that fast charge, take the case off or use a stand charger. On very hot days, lower the brightness and avoid heavy games while it’s plugged in.

Cold is less destructive but still matters: at freezing temperatures the battery delivers less charge and the percentage reading drops. If the phone gets very cold outdoors, let it return to room temperature before recharging. Never try to “warm up” the battery with a hair dryer or body heat.

Use an original or certified charger and cable

The right charger matters more than it seems. A low-quality charger doesn’t regulate voltage or current properly: it can charge too fast, overheat the phone, and permanently damage the battery. The same goes for the cable, which is usually the part that fails first.

Prefer the charger that came in the box or one from a known brand with certification (UL, CE, FCC). Be suspicious of chargers advertising a ridiculous “120W” for very little money. Check that the cable isn’t stripped, kinked, or loose at the connectors — if it is, replace it.

Avoid the habit of grabbing any cable that fits just because it’s lying in a drawer. Fast chargers are convenient, but if the phone gets too hot during fast charging, it’s worth charging slowly.

Find out which apps are draining your battery

A lot of the “battery died fast” you notice comes from a few apps, not the device. Open the settings and find the battery section: on Android it’s under Settings > Battery > Battery usage; on iPhone it’s under Settings > Battery. The list shows which apps consume the most.

The screen is usually the biggest drain, followed by apps running location in the background (maps, social, delivery apps) and games. For each app that shows up near the top for no reason, open that app’s own settings and trim: turn off location when you don’t need it, turn off background refresh, and restrict background data.

Always check for outdated apps or “bloatware” that shipped with the phone and you never use — uninstall or disable them. A well-maintained, updated app drains less than an older, poorly optimized version.

Turn on battery saving mode and the optimization features

The phone already comes with ready-made power-saving tools; the problem is most people never use them. Turn on battery saver (Low Power Mode) to extend the charge and reduce the chemical strain on the battery.

On Android, look for “battery saver” and “adaptive battery”: the system learns your habits and restricts apps you rarely use in the background. On iPhone, turn on adaptive battery and keep Low Power Mode one tap away. Also lower the brightness, shorten the auto-lock timeout, and enable dark mode — on OLED screens this saves real power and generates less heat.

Pay attention to charging: in the battery options, look for “Optimized battery charging” or “charge limit” that holds the charge near 80% when the phone sits on the charger for hours, like overnight.

Build a charging routine that protects the battery at night

A lot of people charge their phone all night simply because it’s convenient. If that’s you, do it in a way that doesn’t stress the battery: use a charger with a limit or optimized charging, and avoid charging that holds 100% while the phone runs hot.

If the phone heats up on a wireless charger, prefer the cable: wireless charging is slower and generates more heat. When you wake up, unplug once it reaches 100% and don’t leave it plugged in all day unnecessarily.

A good routine is: at work, charge the phone during the morning and unplug when it hits 80-90%. No need to charge in the afternoon. When you get home, charge again to a comfortable level and, if you use the phone early in the morning, schedule it to finish close to the time you actually wake up.

Know when it’s time to replace the battery

No habit stops a battery from aging, and after 2 to 3 years of use it’s normal for it to lose capacity. What you must not do is ignore the signs that it’s gotten worse. Check battery health in the settings: on Android, depending on the brand, there’s a battery/state section; on iPhone, go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health.

Replace the battery when: health drops below 80%, the phone shuts off on its own at 20-30% charge, the charge runs out much faster than before, or it takes hours to charge. If the back of the phone is warped, the cover is pulling away, or the phone looks bigger than it was, the battery may be swelling — that’s a short-circuit and fire risk: use it less and take it to a service center.

A battery replacement almost always pays off more than buying a new phone, if the device is otherwise fine. Prefer an official service center and ask to see the new battery before they close it up — it’s the only way to be sure the replacement actually happened.
